Some terms to remember:

Dynasty: A family that rules over an empire for a period of time.

Click here to check out the map of Chinese dynasties over time.

Empire: A large area of different groups of people ruled by one government.

In this class we will focus mostly on the Tang, Song, and Ming dynasties.  They were dynasties in which new discoveries were made, and times when China was interacting with different parts of the world.

This time line might help you see when the different dynasties took place:

OOPS! Forget the comment above. The Chin dynasty was when it was discovered. Those ingredients above are true for TODAY! Sorry for the missunderstanding :P

Sebastian, did you find out how the Chinese used gunpowder (especially after the Chin Dynasty)? There are some interesting ways that the Chinese put it to use in the Song Dynasty, which was from the 900s -- 1200s. I'll have Isaac look into that, since he has gunpowder too.

This is Nick. My invention is the compass. The compass was invented by Zheng Sheui. It was invented around 75 A.D. The compass was useful for navigation. Without the compass it would be hard for explorers to travel and discover stuff. By dudes

This is Natalie. Printing is my invention. Carved wood blocks for printing was invented during the 7th century in the Tang dynasty. Movable type was invented by Bi Sheng of the Song Dynasty from 1041-1048. Without the printing inventions Chinese would not have made books.

This is Austin. The mechanical clock is my invention. The mechanical clock was created by Yi Xing around 723 AD in the Tang Dynasty and it helped measure time. Clocks measure intervals shorter than natural units such as day and night. Without clocks planning would be hard. The clocks provided a measurement so people wouldn't waste time waiting for each other. What has a face but never weeps a clock.
